Before: Some homes find you when you least expect it. That’s exactly what happened with 326 Montgomery Lane. I wasn’t even looking for this house—I was down the street, chatting with a neighbor about possibly buying hers. The lot wasn’t quite right, though, and just as I was mulling it over, my favorite mail carrier, Lamika, strolled up with an unexpected tip. “You know,” she said casually, “the owner of 326 Montgomery is cleaning out the garage. Might be selling soon.” I barely heard the rest. My heart was already racing. I wrapped up my conversation as casually as I could, but the moment I stepped onto my own front porch, instinct took over—I spun around and half-sprinted down the block. Breathless but determined, I walked straight up to the owner, introduced myself, and without hesitation, offered to buy the house on the spot. No overthinking, no drawn-out negotiations—just a handshake deal that would set the stage for something bold.
Challenge: From the moment I envisioned it, I knew this house had to be classic, but with a dark, moody exterior. The challenge? Making a black house look elegant and alluring—striking, not spooky—in a traditional neighborhood. But then, a twist: The neighbors next door asked if I wanted their house, too. “Umm… YES.” And just like that, 322 and 326 Montgomery became a bonded pair, much like the kittens we adopted that same year.
After: I designed them as complements—326 Montgomery’s deep, dramatic exterior offset by the warm cedar tones of its sibling next door. Rich walnut-tone Trex decking framed both homes, while lush fuchsia hydrangeas and crisp boxwoods made 326 feel alive against its dark façade. Inside, the moody exterior gave way to a bright, light-filled sanctuary, proving that contrast can be just as stunning as cohesion. I fall in love with every home we build—but this one? This sexy, statement-making house will always have my heart.
